I’m in a museum, apathetically staring at a 15m long and 3m wide screen which shows a dancing banana. Electronic beats are blaring through the room, but I hardly notice as I’ve still got a piece of tissue wedged in my ear from the Clueso gig.
Learnt yet another lesson at Zermatt: 1. Never walk through an airport door backwards. 2. Always, and I mean ALWAYS, use sun cream. 3. Never use tissues as a kind of improvised ear plugs. They’ll get lost.
And now I can’t breathe – I’ve spent months in smoke-free bars. Yet in Vienna, smoke seems to be the norm, even at this party in a museum. There I am, at Sound:Frame, a festival of audiovisual art, surrounded by hipstermaniacs in the Austrian capital and I feel like I’m 60. Maybe everyone else was right. Everyone keeps telling me that after a year of 40 festivals I’ll look 10 years older. But that I could feel 40 years older is new to me. And after only 6 festivals! I can hardly breathe, and in addition to my ear issue, Zermatt also gave me another souvenir: bronchial phlegm which is clogging up the vessels in my lungs.
But I don’t want to complain. I want to experience things! But my body can’t take in much more, pretty much just the drink in my hand.
The next day I meet up with Eva Fischer, 2010’s Austrian of the year and curator of Sound Frame Festival 2012. The first exhibition 5 years ago comprised of 100m2. Today, visual art from New York, Tokyo and Vienna is displayed on over 1200 m2.
What does a festival mean to you?
EF: An event that takes place once a year, with a tight schedule. The focus is on bringing together artists and visitors, to the benefit of both.
How does one approach audiovisual art when you know nothing about it, like myself?
EF: You go, have a look around and try to soak up the room and the atmosphere. The most important thing is to be there and consciously experience it all.
If you were a visual impression, what would you look like?
EF: Good question, but impossible to answer. I’d be an electrical installation made up of different layers. For my own visualisations I like to use materials I find, street art, or graffitis I develop further. But what this kind of electrical installation would look like, I have no clue.
Thanks Eva!
I can show you what I saw this weekend and what a festival means to me.https://youtu.be/PkDD_1oBNo4
